Amanda Hopkins Becomes First Full-Time Female Scout in Over 60 Years

Jan 14, 2016 by

SeattleMariners3The Mariners recently hired 22-year-old Amanda Hopkins as a full-time scout. Hopkins is the daughter of Ron Hopkins, a longtime scout and former scouting director.

The first female scouts were Edith Houghton (White Sox – 1925-1943) and Bessie Largent (Phillies – 1946-1951). Houghton worked with her husband and Largent was the first full-time female scout to work solo.

It’s surprising that it took so long for an organization to recognize that baseball knowledge and scouting skills are not the exclusive domain of men.
